God Is There

The other day, I read an article about Mother Teresa. It included a quote from her, writing of her struggle with depression:

The loneliness of the heart that wants love is unbearable. – Where is my faith? – Even deep down, right in, there is nothing but emptiness & darkness…. I am told God loves me – and yet the reality of darkness & coldness & emptiness is so great that nothing touches my soul.

That is so sad. She accomplished such great things for the Lord, but we don’t know if she was saved. So many well-meaning, hardworking people such as Mormons or Catholics don’t know the truth about salvation. Mother Teresa may have believed in works-based salvation, which means she thought she could get to heaven by doing  good things. The Bible says otherwise:

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: – Romans 3:10

No one can be good enough to get to heaven. If you have done one thing wrong, you don’t deserve heaven. However, God loves you so much that he made a way for you to get to heaven. He sent his perfect Son, Jesus, to die in your place the death you deserved. All you must to to go to heaven is to believe that he did that, ask God to forgive you for breaking his laws, and receive him into your heart. If you want to learn more about how to go to heaven, please contact me here.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. – Romans 5:8

If you are already a Christian, as Mother Teresa may have been, perhaps you struggle with doubt and depression as she did. I think to some degree, most Christians do. I have doubted my salvation before. But some people struggle deeply with depression or other mental illnesses, and that affects their faith.

If you are considering leaving Christianity, if you don’t know if you believe in God anymore, or if you just have a small doubt in the back of your mind, I am writing this for you. Please stay with God! Many famous Christians have struggled with deep depression or doubts, such as Martin Luther, C. S. Lewis, Charles Spurgeon, and many others.

Take heart. These people kept going even when they perhaps didn’t feel God’s presence.

No matter what you go through, God is there.

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. – Deuteronomy 31:6

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. – Psalm 23:4 (KJV)

Have you ever doubted God? Are you struggling now?

  1. For clarification, be assured that Catholicism does not believe in works-based salvation, and I feel certain that Mother Teresa did not. Your last paragraph, in fact, would be considered quite reasonable by Catholic standards.
A good post, as usual. Have a great day—- Mike

    1. Thank you! Okay, maybe I should have looked more into her personal beliefs. From what I saw, it seemed a little unclear what she believed. Thank you for pointing that out! You have a good day too! 🙂

  2. I don’t know if there is anyone that hasn’t doubted something about their faith, even if it was a doubt in God it might be a doubt of ourselves. If I am wording that right. The world is, or should I say the evil in this world is set up to make us doubt at every turn but you are so right about sticking with Him because He is the only way to eternal happiness. We are but flesh and therefore we will struggle. I have had terrible moments of sadness, feelings of being helpless. Thats why I said I didn’t doubt God but I doubted myself 🙂 Lots of good things to take away from you post Shae. I thank God for continuing to bless you 🙂

I think this post is greatly needed for people. Her quote really surprised me, and of course we all get down, but she, at least in this moment, was really having a hard time.

This is a really good post. So many believers are going through depression, especially concerning the assurance of their salvation. This is so because, understanding extensively the concept of salvation is everything! It’s the bedrock of the christian faith.
    Thank you for this post!

We received salvation through grace alone, no number or types of works will get us there. Great thought provoking post. Merry Christmas!

    1. My bad… I accidentally published it before I had finished. When you post something without a title, WordPress gives you random numbers as a title 😂
